  • * You can register for a maximum of 12 credits per semester, thesis research is required (Reading and Research course 108.803).
  • * Students in the combined Master and Ph.D. program complete both the MA program and Ph.D program together. However, students who have completed their required credits can finish the program 1 year earlier.
  • * Students in the combined Masters and Ph.D. program must submit a <Continuation of MA/Ph.D. combined program> form, or a <Withdrawal of MA/Ph.D. combined program> form before the end of your third semester. Afterwards, your MA/Ph.D. continuation status will be reviewed following your thesis submission.

  • Students in the M.A./Ph.D combined course must follow the Ph.D. requirements.
    • * Domestic Students
      • English(TEPS or TOEFL): Grades submitted at the time of entering graduate school.
      • 2nd Foreign Langauge: Exemptions for M.A. students who receive 60 points or above on the foreign language exam, and for Ph.D. students who score 70 points or above.
    • * International Students
      • Must choose at least two subjects among English, Korean or 2nd foreign language.
      • English (TEPS or TOEFL): Submit scores in the first semester at the beginning of April or 2nd semester at the beginning of October (TEPS 386 score)
      • If your native language is English, you must choose between Korean and a 2nd foreign language.
      • Korean: Exempt if you receive an ‘S’ grade for taking <Korean Language and Culture 1, 2> (These courses cannot be used as credit towards graduation)

Accepted Credits Between Program
    • Bachelor → Masters/M.A & Ph.D. combined program: Up to 6 credits taken during undergrad are accepted towards the master’s program
    • Master → Ph.D.: Up to 12 excess credits taken during the master's program can be used towards the Ph.D. program. (Must obtain B0 or above)
Accepted Credits from Graduate Studies Outside of SNU
    • Before entering the Masters/M.A.&Ph.D. combined/Ph.D. programs, we accepted credits from the same major and same department if you receive a B0 or above grade. Up to 6 credits for the Master's program, 15 credits for the M.A./Ph.D. combined program and 9 credits for the Ph.D. program.
Thesis Review Extension and Retraction
    • Deadline for submitting a thesis: 4 years after completing course requirements for the M.A. program, 6 years after completing course requirements for the Ph.D. program
    • Extension of thesis submission deadline: If the deadline is exceeded, students in the M.A program must submit an extension application by the 8th semester of course completion and by the 12th semester for Ph.D. students. An extension of two years may be approved.
    • Research students who exceed the thesis submission deadline: If you exceed the above extension approval period, student researchers must register as a ‘course-completed student who exceeded the deadline’(초과자 연구생) Master students must register for at least one semester (6 credits or more), while Ph.D. students must register for at least 2 semesters (9 credits or more).
